Arising from a merger deal between Access Bank and Diamond Bank, the launch of the new bank and the official unveiling of its new logo took place today at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.
The new Bank, which is called Access Bank after the completion of all legal processes as at March 19, 2019, has about 29 million customers across the world, 28,000 staff strength and 600 branches, the bank has said.
The Group Chief Executive of Access Bank, Mr Herbert Wigwe, while speaking at the launch said that the merger is irresistible. Adding that the merger would create the finest brand in the banking industry. He thanked Mr. Pascal Dozie, founder of Diamond Bank for handing over his bank to them.
"What we want to do is to take the youthful, vibrancy of Diamond and merge it with the financial strength and trust in Access to create an institution that will be commendable not only in Nigeria but in Africa", Mr. Wigwe said.
Mr. Wigwe added that the dream of changing the face of banking in Nigeria and Africa started in 2002 with his partner, Mr. Aig-Imoukhuede. He noted that with Diamond Bank's 19 million and Access Bank's 10 million customers, the merger will create a new institution which would be beyond banking, customers focused, digitally led and operate on global space and scope.
The Emir of Kano, Mohammed Sanusi II and the Founder of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote were present at the official launching.
During his address, the Emir of Kano said he was not surprised with the new creation of both banks because he has watched Access Bank evolve with amazing technologies and strategies over the years. He said the new entity is one that would be a foremost institution in Africa and beyond.
On his part, the founder of Dangote Group, Mr. Dangote commended the unrelenting passion of Mr. Wigwe and his partner, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede as well as Diamond Bank in creating the new entity.
"The real bank, which is Access Bank is a bank without struggle today. They know how to wire anything and I won't be surprised if they take over a bank outside Nigeria", Dangote state.
